Everyone in my family knows I’m crazy when it comes to rice. Rice can be so simple, but also so complicated. I like to think there is a type of rice and a way to cook it for every scenario. For example, this halal cart style yellow rice recipe, is exactly how I like it. The grains a long and straight, they are also just cooked, so they don’t get mushy when I add my toppings and sauces.
How do you make Yellow Rice like a Halal Cart?
Ingredients:
- Basmati Rice: This is the best rice to use for yellow rice. It is long and not sticky because it has a lower amount of starch.
- Turmeric: This is what give the rice the vibrant yellow color and warm flavor. You can adjust to your liking of the flavor.
- Spices: Adding black pepper and cumin help balance the flavors. Also black pepper should almost always be used with turmeric because black pepper helps to better absorb the turmeric into your body, so you could fully reap to the benefits.
- Salt: A MUST when cooking rice. I try to follow the rule of 1 teaspoon of salt to every cup of rice. This is applicable to all rice types.
- Butter/Oil: You can very easily use olive oil to make this recipe vegan or just don’t want to use butter. You won’t be missing out on any flavor.
Cooking Method:
- Boil water in a kettle or separate pot: Adding boiling water to the rice instead of letting the water come to a boil with the rice will prevent mushy, overcooked rice.
- Not soaking the rice: You should always wash your rice, but do not soak it. Soaking the rice will start breaking down the starches, that will cause the grains to have little indents. I don’t like my rice to have indents (I warned you I’m crazy about rice)
- Toasting the rice: I like to toast the rice in the spices before adding the water just to add a but of flavor nutty flavor to the rice. (This is optional, the only optional step in this process lol)
- Boiling the rice: The most important part to this method! Add the boiling water to the toasted rice. Let the water boil out on high heat until you can see a layer of rice. Then cover with a foil wrapped lid, simmer for 10 minutes on low.
What can I eat yellow rice with?
My favorite ways to eat yellow rice is with falafel, veggies, tahini yogurt sauce and hot sauce! Such a perfect balance of flavors and textures. My brother likes to eat his with chicken shawarma! Since this rice is pretty neutral in flavor, it also works with most Indian curry or daal.
You can choose to build a bowl anyway you personally like. I keep this rice in the fridge for easy and quick work from home lunches.
