Halal Cart Style Red Sauce (Spicy)

What is falafel or shawarma without spicy halal cart style red sauce? I am obsessed with spice (hence the name), so this is a must have with my falafel bowls or pitas. When it comes to spice levels, everyone has a different tolerance, which is why this sauce recipe is great to customize the spice.

Honestly, this sauce is almost creamy which makes is very versatile. I would love to try spreading this on some grilled cheese, the spice would taste great!

How to make Spicy Red Sauce

Ingredients:

  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Fresno Pepper
  • Habanero Pepper
  • Garlic
  • Lemon
  • Salt
  • Cumin

Directions:

  1. On high heat sautΓ© the peppers and garlic in oil. Let them blister and get soft.
  2. Once cool, add the rest of the seasonings and add water slowly to blend.
  3. Add to a squeeze bottle and enjoy!

Tips/Substitutions

  • Depending on your spice tolerance, adjust the amount of fresno and habanero peppers or add extra red bell pepper.
  • For a “semi-homemade” version, following these instructions:
    • Instead of 7 fresnos and 1 habanero, just add 2 fresnos. Then when blending add around half of a bottle of Chili Garlic paste (Sambal Oelek).

Ingredients

  • 2 Red Bell Pepper
  • 7 Fresno Peppers
  • 1 Habanero Peppers
  • 1 Head of Garlic
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 Tbsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Cumin
  • 1/4 Cup Water
  • 2 Tbsp Neutral Oil

Instructions

    Roughly chop the bell peppers, fresnos, habanero, and garlic.

    In a large pan, heat the oil on high. Add all of the chopped peppers and garlic.

    Cook until the peppers are soft and charred. Cool for around 5-10 minutes.

    Use a high speed blender to puree the sauce until very smooth. Add the salt, cumin and lemon. Add water very slowly, until you reach your desired consistency.
